Welcome to the newly updated preceptor training course! This eight hour course is specifically designed to meet Texas standards for preceptor midwives, as well as give any practicing midwife the tools and practical information she will need for successfully selecting and training students.
This presentation draws from the highly successful apprenticeship training model used by Family Birth Services in Grand Prairie, Texas, founder and owner Helen Jolly Nelson, LM, CPM retired. Family Birth Services, founded in 1981, was the very first free-standing birth center in Texas and has been successfully training students with this model since it opened.
The main presenter is Roxanne Anderson, LM, CPM. Roxanne trained at Family Birth Services 28 years ago in a classical apprenticeship with Helen Jolly Nelson and is the current FBS clinical director and administrator. Along with Roxanne, we have great line of up of some of Texas’ most experienced midwives who will also be sharing their knowledge in this workshop including Helen Jolly Nelson, Donna Miller, and Claudine Crews.
From choosing the best apprentice for you, to teaching and supervising her in every scenario, to how to handle conflict and work through real life difficulties, this workshop walks you through each step. Whether you work alone or in a group, doing home births or birth center births or both, we will give you tools you and your apprentice can adapt to your individual practice.
You will become more familiar with the NARM preceptor guidelines, Texas preceptor guidelines, Texas law that applies to student situations, and preceptor-student ethics. You will also learn more about the various educational programs currently being used by students, the PEP process paperwork, as well as learning how to properly handle all the phases of NARM sign offs. Interactive with lots of Q&A and role play, this workshop is designed to be fun as well as practical and informative.
New this year!! We strongly encourage midwives to encourage their own students as well as any potential midwifery students to enroll in the concurrently running, “Steps to Midwifery” pre-conference workshop. This will provide them with the “student version” of this information, and prepare them for solid healthy apprenticeships. Bethany Stricker, who trained at FBS will be teaching this workshop, and there will be interaction between the two workshops in the final hour of the day.
The Preceptor Training Workshop is for fully trained midwives only. Cost is $150 for eight CEUs, and may be paid in advance through Paypal. If you pay and are unable to attend because of a birth, you can send someone else in your place, or, a refund may be requested, minus a $25 processing fee. You can also pay upon arrival but email me if that is your intention so I can have enough handouts.
